It’s definitely a possibility, and for some reason, not one I’d be against. I don’t think Ferny was actually a bad person, he just owed a life debt to a really scummy person.
He’s telling her base truths she needs to know.
This is why Evon is a MATURE comic. Not because of the sex. Because loss and pain are part of being an adult.
Pure-quill, 24K, Board-certified Truth. Ya Haqq.
Shathak will outlive me. I have loved and outlived dogs, cats, and friends. But to reject the pain is to reject the gods’ greatest gift to us.
It seems a common idea these days that immortality, or longevity in this case would be a curse. Ensuring loss, boredom and emptiness. But I’m not so sure.
Since no one has ever been immortal or lived for centuries, how can anyone be sure it would ensure these things?
To paraphrase Dickens… “Age is of incessant labor by immortal creatures, for this earth must pass into eternity before the good of which it is susceptible is all developed. Any spirt will find it’s mortal life too short for it’s vast means of usefulness.”
Evon and Evee will be able to do more good in the mortal world then most will ever be able to. And a life of doing good is always has worth.
They may both lose Hero, but that does not mean a life of pain.
Agreed.
The main character in ‘Perry Rhodan’ (the longest running Science Fiction series in the world) and some of his friends are over 3,000 years old by now. He led humanity into space and has not only rebuild Earth several times, but currently is on his try on a 3rd Galactic version of an UN and also dreams of an intergalactic alliance.
He also married once more recently (for him).
What keeps him going are his goals, no matter the obstacles or how often he as to start again from nearly nothing.
It’s funny when other characters notice that he can still be surprised and astonished by the universe and is despite everything still very human. How much he still cares.
To quote Babylon5:
βTo live on as we have is to leave behind joy, and love, and companionship, because we know it to be transitory, of the moment. We know it will turn to ash. Only those whose lives are brief can imagine that love is eternal. You should embrace that remarkable illusion. It may be the greatest gift your race has ever received.β
Hmmm… anyone who has played fantasy RPGs (online or tabletop) is likely to be familiar with at least one race whose long life puts a spin on how they live.
That race is elves.
There are others (drow, drawes, and others); but almost every time anyone writes up a description on elves, they mention how the long lives flavors how they react to life and to the ‘shorter-lived’ races.
This isn’t such a new concept nor is it unusual.
it’s a bit more… personified than normal.
Good advice no matter how old you are.
Really sounds like he knows from personal experience.
Guess he lost someone he really loved more than anything once.
Considering that Evon was the daughter Fern could have had? Yeah. He is speaking from deep experience.

Even relationships between long-lived spellcasters are unlikely to endure the centuries.
Ferny is “you must be fun at parties” personified.

What that double image of Evon about in panel 7? Is that supposed to be her fully grown? Because she barely looks any different.
I believe that perhaps that would be Evon’s mother. Looks like Fern was in Love with her once – maybe still is.
Yeah it is her mother look at the eyes theyre different.
Green eyes. Nice.

Who would have thought he had it in him. Maybe this is how she’ll be able to accept Evie as Hero’s lover. His time is so short…
