Hey, at least he admitted that he thought about it, and the only thing stopping him would be the danger he’d be putting her in. That’s worth some series romantic brownie points in my book.
Yep, the type with wealth and connections that can lie and connive armies into existence to wipe you off the face of the earth. Hero and Evon don’t stand a chance unless they can find a way of removing the problem. Running will lead to a hunt and a chase with no good end.
If Evee does happen to get involved in this mess, one can only hope that she and Cleo dispatch each other, because if one or the other survived, it would be because they are _that_ dangerous.
Politically, there are probably only two to three ways out of this.
1. Arrange for another marriage for the so that his can be broken without loss of face.
2. He could do something that was so despicable and scandalous that he would no longer be considered an appropriate match.
3. Appeal to the King to have him annul the betrothal, which would put him seriously in the King’s debt…assuming he could be convinced of the need.
Third option is unlikely. Second is just as unlikely, as Hero’s honor probably wouldn’t allow him to commit actions of that nature. And I’m sure that finding someone to take his place has been tried and failed. Cleo wants what she wants, and that is Hero. Now, if for no other reason, because he doesn’t want her and she can’t handle that.
Fourth would be to show proof of Cleo commiting high treason to his kingdom. She was sleeping around, but I think her father would let that slide. But her making contacts with the Cabal is a serious blunder. They now have a way into taking over his kingdom through her and to go after Evon.
#2 could be combined with a #5 — “remove” Cleo. Murder is not required, she could also be abducted and sold into slavery in some distant land. The consequences of being caught at it are severe, but it does inhibit Cleo’s ability to act.
Not that I’d expect Hero to agree to such a scheme.
There’s also do some deed of such heroic stature that the King offers one of those blank checks of ‘whatever you want’ thereby allowing him to ask for the marriage to be canceled. Similar to how Londo in Babylon 5 earned favor with the Emperor and used it to get out of two of his marriages.
OK, I can see Evee letting Evon marry Hero, as Evon kind of kicked her butt, (and she likely figures that since they’re both two sides of the same woman, Evon would likely share Hero, (Yeah, right…)) So Cleo will likely have to be neutralized.
Knowing that Evon would likely disapprove of her killing Cleo, she’s either magically put Cleo in such a compromising position that she’d be ineligible to marry Hero, OR she’d simply seduce Cleo herself, causing a huge scandal. Besides, she and Cleo might actually rather enjoy such a liaison! You never know with some of those royals…
I wonder if there isn’t already a reason why the betrothal would be annulled but it isn’t showing yet. Cleo could be in a rush because she had a little accident with one of her playthings and in a few months hero would have every excuse not to marry her
True if it’s yours but if it was another man’s and showing before the wedding then that could be all the excuse he needs . Another man’s child as eldest and heir could be deemed unnaceptable and while playing around was acceptable to a point getting caught was not. If she is pregnant and it isn’t hero’s and she starts to show before they wed then that should be enough for him to cancel the wedding without losing faith. Cleo has officially insulted him and harmed his house so he isn’t insulting his leige by breaking off the engagement.
I love how innocent and shy Evon looks in the second and third panels.
=^_^=
… and how determined and dangerous in the sixth!
I had to check her eye color to make sure Evee hadn’t sneaked in!
Of course, there is always the possibility that Cleo will wind up targeting Evee instead of Evon and get WAY more than she bargained for 🙂

*serious. I hate typos.

IIRC, so long as the birth didn’t happen before the wedding it wasn’t officially “bad”.
The child wasn’t born out of wedlock.
Just not far enough INTO wedlock…

I like this idea. Cleo being pregnant would also bring up the question of WHOSE child is it. This would then scandalize the kingdom.
I kinda doubt they have DNA tests, but maybe there’s something like it via magic.
Imagine trying to find out who the father is when even Cleo doesn’t know.
Then all the men brought into the scandal as the ‘tests’ are done.
Are you feeling okay Ms. Britt?
